Garage Storage
No matter what condition your garage is in, this special space
can become a great storage area for important items in your household.
First you have to clean it and then get organized as you plan this
important transformation. This work may take a day or two, so plan your
schedule accordingly. Get the supplies you need ahead of time and place
them in the garage.
Start by cleaning out the garage. Remove all trash, broken items, and
litter. Sweep it out thoroughly with an old broom, wearing a dust mask
if you are sensitive to dust. Be careful of insect nests around the
garage door.
Then inspect your garage to see what you can do to increase its storage
capacity. For example, you may want to put up shelves on which to mount
tools, marking them first so you can find them later. Determine whether
a storage cabinet might help you to utilize this space more
efficiently. You could store pet supplies, lawn tools, and assorted
odds and ends so you can find them easily when they are needed.
Keep the garage neat on a routine basis. Don’t let clutter accumulate
so that everything that once was sorted now becomes lost and hard to
find. It may help to put up a list of items that can be found on
various shelves or in the cabinet. Get rid of junk promptly rather than
letting it stack up and make other things hard to find.
If your garage will not hold all the equipment and tools that have
accumulated, consider getting a storage shed. Check out sizes, prices,
and possible locations for your shed to see if this is a feasible
option. If not, consider moving some of your garage debris to another
location, such as the basement or attic, as long as it doesn’t include
anything toxic or flammable.
